To qualify to register, or to vote, an individual must meet each of the following requirements:

1. be a United States citizen;
2. be 18 years or older by the general election day; and
3. be a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days.

To vote, an individual must be registered to vote for at least 30 days before election day. Additionally, the registration or change must be received or postmarked 30 days prior to the election in which the individual intends to vote. The County Board of Elections provides notification of where to vote.

For citizens who will be unable to go to their polling place on election day, they may request an absentee ballot from the Board of Elections and submit it by mail to the Board of Elections, 205 Putnam Street, Marietta, Ohio 45750.

Notary Public Commission
The Clerk of Courts in its legal division administers the oath of office to Notary Publics.

Individuals interested in becoming a Notary Public should stop in the Clerk of Courts office at 205 Putnam St, Washington County Courthouse, third floor and request necessary paper work and instructions.

In the State of Ohio, a notary public is a person appointed and commissioned by the Governor of the state to:

  • administer oaths required or authorized by law;
  • take and certify depositions;
  • receive and certify acknowledgements of deeds, mortgages, liens, powers of attorney,
  • and other written instruments; and
  • receive, make, and record notorial protests.

These functions may be performed by a notary anywhere in the State of Ohio. Notary publics hold their office for a term of 5 years, at which time their term may be renewed. Attorneys admitted to the practice of law in the State of Ohio hold their offices indefinitely as a notary public.
